High street chains in urgent shampoo recall over ‘microbiological risk’ to customers

The Amika Mirrorball High Shine + Protect Antioxidant shampoo has been pulled from beauty retailers due to it not meeting regulatory standards, with all affected products being from batches produced in 2023 and 2024.

While recognisable for its pink patterned bottle, the product is a part of the Shine-O-Sphere collection, which includes items like a hair mask, gloss spray, and conditioner.

Retailers including TK Maxx and major online platforms such as Cult Beauty and Sephora have been forced to issue recalls having sold the item between April and December 2024. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), responsible for overseeing the recall, has sent out an alert stating: “The product poses a microbiological risk as it could have a change in odour and in rare cases cause temporary irritation due to the presence or potential presence of the bacterium P.Gergoviae.”

Meanwhile, Amika has made it clear that the recall is limited to this particular shampoo and does not affect any other products they offer. The company communicated its stance through a release in the Express saying: “We have been monitoring recent feedback citing change in odour and in rare cases, temporary irritation. There have been no reported serious adverse health events associated with using this product.”

It emerged that the recall was initiated following the discovery that many production lots by a third-party manufacturer did not align with the high-quality benchmarks of Amika, traced to contamination with P Gergoviae bacterium, reports Chronicle Live.

The firm added: “If you have the product in your possession, please stop using it immediately, even if the product does not appear to have a change in odour or quality issue.

“We want to reassure you that, after consultation with an independent toxicology group, we are confident the use of this product does not pose a serious health or safety risk to healthy people. However, individuals with certain risk factors such as a weakened immune system or broken skin may be more susceptible to infection.”
