’Heavy snow’ forecast for ten Irish areas as Met Eireann update weather warnings

As many as ten areas across Ireland look set to face heavy snow as an icy front dominates our weather for the coming days.

A low front which may have cut short any potential snowfall looks set to stay well south of the country with a more “widespread” risk of snow this coming weekend.

According to Ireland’s weather channel, the country will remain on the cold side with falls of snow likely in parts. The most at risk areas include the east of Connacht and the majority of Leinster.

This won’t be a short lived cold spell either with it likely to last well into next week. Temperatures look set to remain well below average for the time of year.

Ireland’s Weather Channel said: “Some tentative signs amounts the various models that the low pressure is now likely to stay a little further to the southeast ensuring Ireland remains in the cold sector and as a result, increases the risk of more widespread snowfall on Saturday through to Sunday night.”

“All major weather models agree that Ireland will remain on the cold side of this developing low pressure, with heavy falls of snow likely in some areas. At the moment it looks like parts of Munster, much of Leinster and east Connacht are most at risk, but that still may change.”

“The cold spell looks set to last well into next week also irrespective of the development of the low pressure system. Temperatures will remain below normal for the time of year, with a continued risk of some wintry falls in places with severe night frosts becoming the norm.”

“Also, please be aware of the risk of icy stretches on the roads overnight and into tomorrow morning. Please drive with extra caution.”

Donegal Weather Channel has echoed those sentiments , saying: “some hail and snow showers also moving into northern parts of Ulster and north Connacht with some snow accumulations possible.”

10 areas look set to face the worst of it and have been placed under a Status Yellow warning for ice and snow. They are: Donegal, Derry, Down, Armagh, Antrim, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Sligo, Leitrim, Mayo.

Meanwhile, Met Eireann have released their latest forecast for the next couple of days. Today will be cold and frosty but dry in most places. There are chances of snow and sleet with highest temperatures of 2 – 6 degrees.
