Health spa and almost 130 holiday lodges planned for golf club

A spa and almost 130 holiday lodges could be built at a golf course that is being brought back into use. The Kyngs Golf and Country Club, off Station Road in Market Bosworth, closed in 2016, but over the last few years Statue Homes has gained planning permission for a new clubhouse and a 50-bed hotel on the site as well four holiday lodges and two subterranean lodges.

Now the company has asked Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council for permission to build a “golf leisure and health spa”, as well as 126 holiday lodges. The spa would include facilities such as a swimming pool, as well as hydrotherapy, training and ice plunge pools, saunas, treatment rooms, a gym, dance studio, health and beauty shops and a “health bar”.

But previous plans have been viewed with suspicion by local residents. When the hotel was approved last year, almost 30 people objected to the plans, arguing that the golf course wasn’t operational, that the town didn’t need a hotel and that the building would “have a dramatic effect on the landscape”.

At the time, heritage group The Market Bosworth Society said: “Golf has not been allowed since the property changed hands and the golf club members at that time were evicted from the site.” When the subterranean lodges were approved, 23 people objected.

The 126 holiday lodges would be “located at the upper northern reaches” of the course. Guests would have to leave their cars in the main parking area of the club and take a “call on demand” electric buggy to reach their accommodation. Planning documents submitted to the council say the spa and holiday lodges will only be used by the members of the club, or people who are playing the course.

The application documents can be viewed on the council’s planning portal, and comments and objections should be made by Monday, January 27.
