Greenock Morton forced to call off championship match amid ‘major gas leak’

A “major gas leak” has forced the postponement of Greenock Morton’s match against Raith Rovers on Sunday, January 12.

The SPFL William Hill Championship match was due to kick off at 3pm, however, the issue at Cappielow means it cannot go ahead.

The club says that services are on hand to fix the issue, but that they have been advised the issue will not be fixed in time for the match.

Low temperatures on the pitch also meant that it would have been a race against time to have the pitch ready. A new fixture date will be announced in due course.

The Greenock Morton statement said: “Tomorrow’s William Hill Championship match against Raith Rovers has been postponed following a major gas leak at Cappielow.

“Services are on hand to fix the issue but we have been advised this will not be fixed in time for tomorrow’s match.

“The pitch is also still suffering from the low temperatures this week and would have been against the clock to be fit for tomorrow.

“We understand this is frustrating for supporters and it is very frustrating for the club as well.

“A new date will be announced in due course.”
