Irish names are steeped in rich cultural heritage and history. Many of these names have origin stories that are as beautiful as the name itself sounds.
According to statistics, Irish names are actually on the rise in popularity. More parents are choosing old, traditional Irish names for their children and others are looking for fresh, contemporary monikers for their little ones.
The name Doireann is one of these names that has had a resurgence in popularity lately. Pronounced ‘Dirr-en’ it is given to girls, and has an incredible origin story.
The Irish name Doireann comes from the Irish words for ‘stormy’ or ‘tempestuous.’ It originates from the mythological figure, Doireann, who was the daughter of Bodb Derg – the King of the Tuatha Dé Danann, which were a mythological race in Irish mythology that included kings, queens, druids, bards, warriors, heroes, healers and craftsmen.
His daughter, Doireann, was said to have poisoned legendary Irish warrior Fionn mac Cumhaill after he spurned her romantic advances. As a result, Doireann was seen as a name that held a lot of power and represented strong femininity. Therefore, it was reserved for girls who were thought to be special and intelligent.

Those who have done the name justice include Doireann MacDermott, an Irish academic who passed away last November, and more recently, Irish poet, Doireann Ní Ghríofa.
Despite its beautiful sound and meaning, Doireann remains a relatively uncommon name. Doreen is sometimes seen as the anglicized version of the name.
