Plans from Glasgow University to build student housing on a west end car park are to go on display to the public.
The university is looking into building a block of flats on Lillybank Gardens, near Hillhead Subway Station. The car park is currently owned by the university, but managed by Glasgow City Council under a lease agreement.
According the the uni, the project aims to “redevelop the existing hardstanding area, currently used for parking, into a sympathetic, inclusive, student-centred hub, featuring modern accommodation and accessible public spaces”.
The university states that the proposal will aim to address the “shortage” of appropriate student accommodation close to campus, while also ensuring that the west end remains a “vibrant” area of Glasgow.
It is also hoped the development will support local businesses and pay homage to the historic homes that once stood on the site. Planners say the development will “restore” frontages to Lilybank Gardens and Great George Lane, turning the car park into a “lively and integrated space for the university and wider community”.
Included in the plans will be active spaces and pedestrian pathways that will create a transition between Ashton Lane and Cresswell Lane.
According to the public notice portal, there will be two pre-application consultations at University of Glasgow, Advanced Research Centre, 11 Chapel Lane, Glasgow, G11 6EW.
They will take place on:
- Monday, January 13 between 3pm and 7pm
- Monday, February 10 between 3pm and 7pm.
