Glasgow school to get extension in bid to create eight new classrooms

A secondary school for pupils with complex learning needs is due to get an extension to create eight new classrooms under proposals.

Plans for 1967 built Linburn Academy include a refurbishment – which will also see the secondary get a bigger hall and gym area among other improvements.

Pupils and staff are to be moved to Greenview Learning Centre until December 2025 while work takes place on the Penilee school.

Other improvements to the south side school would include making it more energy efficient to meet a green target – called the Enerphit Certification.

Additional work would see the car drop off zone for pupils redeveloped and a makeover of the play space outside.

The school managed to land funding from the Learning Estate Investment Programme (LEIP) in 2023, based on proposals to extend the building to make room for up to 48 pupils.

The school’s website said the current role is 35 for the building.

A planning application for the work has been submitted to Glasgow City Council by the education department, which is under consideration.

A design statement said: “The proposed school comprises eight classrooms, accommodating 48 pupils, along with a multi-purpose hall, retreat rooms, life skills room, sensory space, offices, toilets, ICR, and ancillary spaces including a kitchen, plant and bin store. There will be a new landscape strategy within the playground boundary.”

The statement added: “Improving the existing school at Linburn will secure the long term future of potential of an existing building creating a space better suited to the users and future proofing the building through flexible adaptations and high energy efficiency and building performance.”

The school has currently been using a modular building on the site to provide two extra classrooms.
