Gardaí in Connacht shared the surprising discovery they made after pulling over a tractor driver who they had been alerted to by a member of the public.
The Garda Traffic account on X, formerly Twitter, gave the details of a young road user who had been stopped in Roscommon and was found to be breaking multiple laws at once.
The social media page stated: “Our Roads Policing Unit in Roscommon pulled in the driver of this tractor in Elphin yesterday afternoon after a call from a member of the public.”
“The driver, who was 15, had no licence, no insurance or tax.” The post also showed a photo, taken on Sunday, of the blue tractor at the side of the road with a Garda jeep behind it.
Currently, the law states that a person cannot drive a tractor in a public place unless they are at least 16 years of age and hold a learner permit or a full category W driving licence.
According to Teagasc, a person as young as 14 can drive a tractor on a farm if they have attended a formal training course run by a competent training provider.

The video, at Carnmore Cross just outside the city, was taken from the dash cam and shows the lights turning green as they and the driver in front of them begin to drive towards the junction.
However, as the driver gets to the cross, a car suddenly emerges from the left and drives through the junction in front of the two drivers.
The incident was captured on camera and shared on social media as the user lamented the ‘mind blowing’ actions of the driver.
