A long-standing Galway restaurant has shared they real reason they changed their name after over three decades under their original moniker, Fat Freddy’s.
Freddy’s has been a Galway staple since 1988, and is famed as a slice of Italian cuisine on Quay Street in the city’s Latin Quarter. The pizza and pasta specialists changed their name recently, dropping the ‘Fat’ and going by ‘Freddy’s’ ever since.
And they shared the real reason that the famous name above the door changed. Freddy’s joked: “Freddy decided to turn his life around: he hit the gym, went on a diet, and shed a few pounds. With his new look came a new name: we’re now simply Freddy’s! This change marked the beginning of a new era for us.
Freddy’s told Galway Beo: “We renovated the restaurant about three and a half years ago, and since then, we’ve been reaching for the stars. Our mission is to continue providing an extraordinary experience for both our old and new customers, and we’re confident that if you come back to visit us, you’ll be pleasantly surprised! We hope to see you soon!”
In July 2023, Dara and Sophie, who ran Freddie’s Italian Restaurant on Quay Street bid farewell to the business and handed back over the reins to Dara’s family.
The pair have guided the restaurant through the most challenging of conditions including a global pandemic as well as redeveloping the restaurant to its current stunning look.
“We left our jobs in Dublin during the pandemic to transform Fat Freddy’s, into the vibrant Freddy’s on Quay St., a place we are immensely proud of,” Dara and Sophie said.
