Several areas and roads in Galway have been closed over the snow warning as Met Eireann issues an update on the current cold weather status,
Motorists have been warned to take caution when travelling along roads across the county as an ice warning is set in place this week predicting dangerous driving conditions.
Sleet and snow have been forecast for most of Ireland with a 24 hour yellow weather warning in place for Connacht from Saturday to Sunday.
Roads in Connemara have already been impacted as Friday saw motorists warned over roads in Letterfrack from Renvyle.
A photo shared on social media shows a bus pulled over by the side of the road in the Kylemore area as drivers are told ‘be careful out there’.
A warning was issued elsewhere which read: “Kylemore to recess road black ice, bus off road at Kylemore recess cross.”
The Met Eireann warning for snow and ice on Saturday reads: “Falls of sleet and snow with snowfall accumulations expected.”
Potential Impacts include:
- Hazardous travelling conditions
- Poor visibility
- Travel disruption
Ireland is bracing itself for a severe snow storm with low lying areas seeing as much as 20cm of snow over the coming days.
The times that will see the most snowfall have been revealed with Donegal Weather Channel claiming the heaviest will be between 8pm Saturday to around 6pm Sunday.
This snow threat will also move into next week with heavy accumulations in parts of Connacht and Ulster next week .
The latest snow maps is showing the disruptive snow will mostly impact eastern Connacht, the midlands, north Munster. Up to 40 cm of snow looks set to hit higher ground across the country.
A meeting of Met Eireann, The National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management (NDFEM) & local Authorities will take place later today when weather warnings will be issued.
Kenneth from Donegal Weather Channel expects “orange warnings for snow/ice and low temperature /Ice warnings for the weekend and into next week with Parts of the Midlands, Connacht, Ulster and Leinster could see red warnings issued for significant snow accumulations also.”
