Future of shopping centre in doubt as New Look announces exit

The future of a major Leicestershire shopping centre has been thrown into further doubt after New Look confirmed its departure. The retailer has become the latest to leave the Carillon Court Shopping Centre in Loughborough, with fears growing about the centre’s long-term future.

Signs confirming New Look’s departure were spotted earlier this message. The message from the fashion retailer read: “Thanks for having us, but its time to say goodbye… this store will be closing on Tuesday January 21.”

New Look’s imminent departure makes them the longest in a long line of stores to close or leave the Carillon in recent months. In November last year, Vision Express said it had left the shopping centre

Several stores have closed after being told their leases would not be renewed. Among them include Vision Express, HM Samuel and The Body Shop.

Speaking last November, a spokeswoman for Vision Express told LeicestershireLive its Carillon Court branch had relocated because the centre was “closing.” Meanwhile, the likes of The Body Shop shut as part of the company’s administration process.

Retailer WHSmith previously confirmed it would be shutting its store in the venue this year “owing to the landlord’s redevelopment plans”. Rumours that Carillon Court could be converted into student flats have been widely circulated but have never been officially confirmed.

Independent retailers have also been affected by the changes at Carillon Court. Oh Pretty Co, The Repair Shop and Grape Tree have all departed the centre after reportedly not having their leases renewed.

LeicestershireLive has approached New Look for comment and retail property consultant Space, which works on behalf of the centre’s owners, about the closure and redevelopment rumours.
