There are a number of road closures in place across the North East this week that drivers should be aware of, including a major road closure just outside Newcastle city centre.

Some roads are closed while others have lane closures. Temporary traffic measures or diversion routes may also be in place on roads in the region. Motorists are urged to make allowances for these closures and alter their travel arrangements if necessary.

Drivers should also be aware that the Gateshead Flyover has been closed with immediate effect since Friday, December 13 after “serious concerns about the structural integrity” of the flyover were raised by engineers following inspections.

Newcastle

  • One lane closed due to roadworks on A1018 Newcastle Road in both directions at B1291 Thompson Road. Until January 10.

  • Traffic taking turns due to gas main work on Ranmere Road in both directions from Armstrong Road to Knott Place. Until January 17.
  • Temporary traffic lights due to emergency repairs and roadworks on Brighton Road in both directions at Balfour Street. Until January 24.
  • Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on Armstrong Road in both directions between Hodgkin Park Road, Benwell and Woodstock Road, Scotswood. Until February 14.
  • Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on B6317 Whickham Highway at Knightside Gardens. Until February 14.
  • No through traffic allowed due to gas main work on Raby Street in both directions between B1312 Shields Road and Corbridge Street. Until February 23.
  • Pilgrim Street Southbound in Newcastle city centre closed due to long-term roadworks between Blackett Street and A167 Swan House Roundabout. Until March 2025.
  • Pilgrim Street Southbound closed due to long-term roadworks from Blackett Street to A167(M). Until March 2025.
  • Market Street One Way Street closed due to long-term roadworks from Pilgrim Street to John Dobson Street. Until March 2025.
  • One lane closed due to roadworks on A167 Tyne Bridge in both directions between Hawks Road and Swan House Roundabout. Until April 4.
  • Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on B1311 Elswick Road at Grainger Park Road, Elswick. Until May 22.
  • Dunstanburgh Road at St Anthonys closed due to roadworks from Grasmere Avenue to Monkchester Road, Walker. Until July 1.
  • No through traffic allowed due to roadworks on Lombard Street in both directions at B1600 Quayside. Between 8pm and 6am Mondays to Sundays until July 2028.

Gateshead

North Tyneside

  • Tyne Street closed due to roadworks from Stephenson Street to Norfolk Street. Until January 31.
  • Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on Liddell Street in both directions near Dolphin Quay. Until January 31.
  • Contraflow and roadworks on A19 Tyne Tunnel in both directions from A194 Leam Lane (Lindisfarne Roundabout, Jarrow) to A193 Tynemouth Road (Howdon Roundabout, North Shields). On Sundays until March 3.
  • Grand Parade and Beverley Terrace Southbound closed due to long-term roadworks from Marden Avenue to Beach Road, Cullercoats. Until April 2025.
  • Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on Wooley Street at Wallsend bus station. Until May 21.
  • No through traffic allowed due to roadworks on Russell Street in both directions at Bedford Street. Until July 31.
  • No through traffic allowed due to roadworks on Albion Terrace in both directions at A193 Albion Road. Until July 31.
  • Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A193 The Links near Eastbourne Avenue, Whitley Bay. Expect delays. Until October 15.

South Tyneside

  • Traffic taking turns due to gas main work on Beach Road between A183 Anderson Street and South Woodbine Street. Until December 31.
  • One lane closed due to roadworks on A1290 Downhill Interchange at A19 at Testo’s Roundabout. Until March 28.
  • Contraflow and roadworks on A19 Tyne Tunnel in both directions from A194 Leam Lane (Lindisfarne Roundabout, Jarrow) to A193 Tynemouth Road (Howdon Roundabout, North Shields). On Sundays until March 2025.

Northumberland

  • Temporary traffic lights due to emergency repairs and gas main work on A695 in both directions near Eastgate Bank, Mickley. Until January 2.

  • Temporary traffic lights due to emergency repairs and gas main work on Woodside in both directions between Broadway and Linden Way. Until January 8.

  • Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A193 Renwick Road near Claremont Terrace, Blyth. Expect delays. Until 4pm on January 20.
  • Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on The A193 in both directions at Marine Terrace. Until 4pm on January 20.

  • Traffic taking turns due to gas main work on Front Street in both directions at Burnside Close. Until January 24.

  • Traffic taking turns due to gas main work on Front Street in both directions at Northcott Gardens. Until January 24.

  • Stamfordham Road in both directions closed due to gas main work from B6323 Ponteland Road to Western Way, High Callerton. Until February 21.

  • No through traffic allowed due to gas main work on Stamfordham Road in both directions between Birney Hill and B6323 Ponteland Road. Until February 21.
  • Bridge Street in both directions closed due to roadworks between Regent Street and B1329. Until March 21.
  • No through traffic allowed due to roadworks on Percy Street in both directions between B1328 Bridge Street and Carlton Street. Until March 21.

  • Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on Netherton Lane in both directions between Longmeadows and B1331 Ridge Terrace. Until March 24.

  • Common Bank in both directions closed due to roadworks between the A686 and Thornley Gate. Until May 15.

Sunderland
