A number of flood alerts and warnings remain in place around Derbyshire following a wet and cold start to 2025. Most of the warnings were issued by the Environment Agency on Sunday, January 5, after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for rain over the weekend.
Around the north of Derby the impact is set to be fairly minor, however, in South Derbyshire, residents around a number of villages are being advised to prepare for flooding. The heavy flooding and also snow has caused well-known routes to be closed in recent days, including the A617, Winnats Pass, and Haslams Lane in Darley Abbey.
A flood alert means that flooding is possible, whereas a flood warning means it is expected. A spokesperson for the Met Office has shared various ways to stay safe in the event of a flood.
A statement from the forecaster reads: “Heavy rainfall can cause flooding. This can be dangerous and can happen very quickly. The effects can be devastating. A flood plan can help you to prepare for flooding and reduce the impact it might have to your home, business or community, it can also help with the recovery process.”
It urges those who may be affected to think about putting together an emergency flood kit with essential items that will help cope in a flood. These items include:
- Insurance documents and list of contact numbers
- Torch & spare batteries
- First aid kit and any prescription medicines
- Warm waterproof clothes and blankets
- Bottled water and snacks
- Battery or wind-up radio
- Supplies for looking after your baby or pet
The forecaster added: “Make sure that everyone knows where to find this kit and what to do if flooding happens.” You can view the full list of Derbyshire flood warnings and alerts in place, correct as of 6.30pm this evening, below:
