Derbyshire is grappling with a number of flood alerts and warnings after enduring a wet and icy introduction to 2025. Most of the warnings were issued by the Environment Agency on Sunday, January 5, after the Met Office issued a number of yellow weather warnings for rain and ice this week.
The areas around Derby are not expected to experience severe disruption, while some South Derbyshire villages are being warned to ramp up preparations for potential flooding. Torrential downpours and snowfalls have recently forced closures on key routes like the A617, Winnats Pass, and Darley Abbey’s Haslams Lane.
A flood alert signifies potential flooding, in contrast to a flood warning which signals flooding is expected. In view of the flood risk, the Met Office spokesperson has shared key advice on staying secure amidst rising waters, stating: “Heavy rainfall can cause flooding. This can be dangerous and can happen very quickly.
“The effects can be devastating. A flood plan can help you to prepare for flooding and reduce the impact it might have to your home, business or community, it can also help with the recovery process.” The weather agency urges those in at-risk areas to contemplate assembling an emergency flood kit loaded with essentials to weather through the ordeal.
The forecaster urged: “Make sure that everyone knows where to find this kit and what to do if flooding happens.” Below you can see the complete rundown of flood warnings and alerts for Derbyshire, up-to-date as of 7am on Thursday (January 9):
