Fresh New Year’s Day weather warning issued for Cheshire

New Year is set to be a washout in Cheshire with a 24-hour weather warning for heavy rain issued. The Met Office had originally issued a 21-hour yellow warning for wind – but that has now been scrapped, although blustery conditions are still expected.

Now forecasters are predicting huge downpours as we enter 2025. The yellow warning for rain – covering the entire county – comes into force from 6pm on New Year’s Eve and runs until 6pm on New Year’s Day.

Temperatures are also set to plummet overnight heading into January 2 and 3, with lows of -6 in some parts of Cheshire. The weather warning for rain states: “Heavy rain is likely to lead to disruption across Wales and northwest England, with a chance that some locations may experience flooding.

“Beginning on Tuesday (New Year’s Eve), persistent and at times heavy rainfall is expected as a band of rain becomes slow-moving across the region, accompanied by strong winds. There remains a bit of uncertainty around how this evolves on Wednesday morning, which will impact final rainfall totals, but rain is expected to clear to the southeast through Wednesday afternoon.”

Andy Page, chief forecaster with the Met Office, said: “There is a very complicated weather forecast for the UK with snow, strong winds and heavy rain all feature for parts of the UK. Almost the entire UK is covered by at least one weather warning during the coming week.

“With such a varied and complex weather situation there is potential for the pattern of warnings to shift and possibly escalate in some areas. With lots of celebrations and people on the move over the coming days, we are urging everyone to keep checking the forecast so they can update their plans.”
