Fresh Glasgow weather warning as Met Office predicts four days of ice and snow

A fresh weather warning has been issued for Glasgow as the Met Office warns the city faces four days of severe winter weather.

The city is under weather warnings from Friday (January 3) to Monday (January 6). A yellow weather warning for ice comes into place at 4pm Friday and will remain in place until 10am Saturday.

Ice is expected to form ‘readily’ on untreated surfaces as temperatures plunge below freezing ‘widely’. The warning covers all of Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland and North West England.

A second yellow weather warning, for snow, comes into force at midnight on Sunday (January 5), and will remain in place until midday Monday. The Met Office warns of “heavy snow on Sunday and overnight into Monday” that “may cause some disruption.”

The warning covers much of Scotland. Glasgow avoids the more severe amber weather warnings for snow issued across northern England, the Midlands and Wales from Saturday night and throughout Sunday.

After a mild Hogmanay, when temperatures reach 11°C during the day, temperatures fell below freezing on Thursday night into Friday morning, leading to ice forming widely on pavements across Glasgow today. Tonight, forecasters predict lows of 1°C in the city, but a ‘feels like’ temperature of -1°C from 7pm to midnight.

In a statement accompanying Friday’s weather warning, the Met Office said: “Temperatures will again fall widely below freezing during Friday evening. This will allow ice to readily form on untreated surfaces, particularly where roads and pavements remain wet from wintry showers.

“Scattered showers will fall as a mixture of rain, sleet and snow. Most areas are unlikely to see any fresh accumulations of snow though a slight covering is possible in places, especially over parts of northern Scotland.”
