Fosse Way School wins top award for inclusive religious education

Fosse Way School in Radstock has been honoured with the prestigious WIRE (Widening Inclusivity in RE) Award for its outstanding efforts to make Religious Education (RE) accessible to all students, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

The award was presented by Westfield Councillor Dr Eleanor Jackson, alongside the chair of Westfield Parish Council, Cllr Phil Wilkinson.

The school’s innovative approach to RE included a variety of initiatives during the 2023/24 academic year, each aimed at fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of diverse faiths among students.

Among the highlights was a visit from a member of the Bristol & West Progressive Jewish Congregation, who delivered an engaging session for secondary classes. Students explored Jewish artefacts, tasted traditional Challah bread, and learned about the Jewish faith in a hands-on, interactive manner.

Naomi Mitchell, a staff member at Fosse Way, further enhanced the school’s inclusivity efforts by participating in a guided tour of a mosque in Bath. This experience included a Q&A session with the Imam, offering insights into Islamic practices and beliefs.

Additionally, sensory students in two primary classes contributed to the Spirited Arts RE competition by creating a vibrant collage representing nature within manmade spaces. Their artistic expression highlighted the creative and accessible ways the school integrates RE into the curriculum.

Fiona Skinner, headteacher at Fosse Way School said: “The WIRE Award is significant to us because ensuring access to Religious Education for all our students is crucial. As a school catering to children aged four to nineteen with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), we face certain challenges in teaching, but this recognition demonstrates that everyone can learn about diverse faiths.”
