A former NHS doctors surgery in Chelmsford that has been closed for more than a year appears set to reopen as a private health centre. The Dickens Place Surgery closed in April 2023 having served residents in the Melbourne and Newlands Spring areas of Chelmsford.
A large banner placed outside the former NHS surgery says the service is ‘coming soon’. They describe themselves as being an urgent care and specialist clinic and will be open between 8am and 8pm.
EssexLive has tried contacting the surgery – which is to open opposite Morrisons – to find out more information. They have yet to respond to our questions on when they will open, whether they will provide only private care and who the centre’s management will be.

The former Dickens Place Surgery closed almost two years ago after the surgery’s GP partners gave notice on their contract. It left more than 5,000 people searching for new healthcare provisions.
Many residents decided to register with Melbourne House Surgery – around half a mile away from Dickens Place – or the Chelmer Medical Partnership which is 0.7 miles away. NHS data stated 32,000 people were registered with the Chelmer Medical Partnership in December 2024.
