Former Huddersfield pupil’s ‘northern response’ to winning Golden Globe

Yorkshire’s Jessica Gunning has won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Female Actor in the TV category for her role in Netflix hit Baby Reindeer.

The former Holmfirth High pupil collected the award at the Beverley Hilton in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, for her role in the show as Martha Scott. Gunning, who grew up in Holmfirth and attended Greenhead College in Huddersfield, almost tripped up as she collected her award.

She joked: “You almost saw my Golden Globes” before sharing an anecdote about getting a hamster for Christmas as a child.

She said she kept saying “I can’t believe that is happening to me” in her “very Yorkshire accent”, which has become the “soundtrack of my life this year”. After thanking her co-star and Baby Reindeer creator Richard Gadd, she had a typically Northern response to winning the Golden Globe.

“Thank you to Richard Gadd, Baby Reindeer has changed my life in ways that I can’t even explain … I know the eight-year-old me would be chuffed to bits,” Gunning, 38, said.

Holmfirth High congratulated Gunning on her award, posting on social media: “We couldn’t be prouder and more thrilled for her. Huge congratulations Jess from all of us. #AlwaysFollowYourDreams.”

Baby Reindeer was named best limited TV series. Gunning won an Emmy earlier this year for her role in the show. Overall, the 2025 Golden Globes was a bad night for British actors and film-makers who walked away with only a handful of gongs.
