Former Devon and Cornwall Police officer arrested on suspicion of stalking and harassment

A former Devon and Cornwall Police officer is understood to have been arrested by police following an allegation he and a woman had stalked and harassed an individual over a two week period last year.

The arrests were carried out by officers from Devon and Cornwall Police, under instructions by another force who are leading the inquiry into the allegations.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police told PlymouthLive: “A male and female were arrested by Devon and Cornwall Police on behalf of West Yorkshire Police in connection with an allegation of stalking and harassment reported to have taken place between August 25 and September 7, 2024.

“Both have since been released pending further enquiries.”

It is understood the 55-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman from the Newquay area of Cornwall, were arrested for stalking and harassment on December 27, 2024.

Both have been released on bail until next month.

At this stage neither Devon and Cornwall Police nor West Yorkshire Police has confirmed the identity or former rank of the officer as the College of Policing national policy is not to name suspects on arrest, only on charge.

This followed the Leveson Inquiry into the culture and practices of the press – commonly known as the phone-hacking inquiry – where Lord Justice Leveson said that arrested suspects should not be named “save in exceptional and clearly identified circumstances”.
