Stephen (Steve) YOUNG
(Steve) A Nottingham City Councillor for the Clifton South ward and IT manager with British Rail. Stephen Young, 68, known to his friends and family as Steve, moved to St Anns in 1979 and later Hyson Green, before moving to Lenton where he has lived for 40 years. Born in Stanley, County Durham, a colliery town, after school he spent a gap year working at Consett Ironworks and then went to Leicester University where he gained a degree in Mathematics. Mr Young worked as a British Rail IT manager in Nottingham from 1979 until he retired in 2010. There he met his partner, Anne, and they have been together for 40 years. Mr Young’s interests were wide and varied. He was politically active, carrying out several roles and campaigning activities in his local Constituency Labour Party over many years. He was a Nottingham City Councillor for Clifton South ward from 2015 to 2019. In addition to his council duties, he was a board member of Nottingham City Homes, and vice-chair of the Clifton Advice Centre’s management committee. He was passionate about the need to develop the local economy and opportunities for local people in Clifton and any measures to ease the cost of living, particularly the need for council housing, affordable rents and sustainable heating. He campaigned for the tram line from Nottingham to Clifton, and the development of the Clifton Triangle, now the site of Lidl and B&M. When he retired as a councillor in 2019, he remained as a volunteer member of Clifton Advice Centre’s management committee until the present day. He enjoyed going to classical concerts and the theatre. He played the piano and went walking daily. He enjoyed travel having visited over forty countries, including a train trip from Thailand to Singapore, travel to Borneo, Central America, North America, the Galapagos Islands, Madagascar, India, Nepal and China, safaris in Kenya and Tanzania, and several holidays working on a tallship in the South Pacific. And of course, coming from the North East, he supported Newcastle United. He died unexpectedly after a short illness on Friday 15 November in the Queens Medical Centre. He is survived by his partner Anne and his older brother Tony. Funeral will be held at Wilford Hill Crematorium on Monday 30th of December 2024 at 3:30pm.
