Flooding in Killingworth has seen the A189 close after a water main burst in Killingworth. Northumbrian Water and Northumbria Police have been working to carry out repairs and minimise disruption.
The A1056 in Newcastle was also closed due to the build up of water, increasing the impact on people’s travel. Now, Northumbrian Water are reassuring motorists that they aim to reopen the roads within 24 hours.
Police are asking drivers to find alternative routes when possible as work continues to fix the burst main and pump the excess water.
Drone footage and photographs from the scene show the extent of the flooding, with the entire roundabout covered in water.
Northumbrian Water said: “Our teams are currently carrying out repairs on a burst water main on Sandy Lane (A1056), North Gosforth.
“The A189 has been closed in all directions at the roundabout/junction of Killingworth Way and Sandy Lane Roundabout and police are asking motorists to use alternative routes where possible.
“The burst was reported in the early hours and crews have worked through the night to isolate and begin the repair, which includes rezoning the water network so there is minimal impact to our customers’ supply.
“We will be working hard throughout the day with our partners to clear the standing water from the highway and we are hoping the main will be fixed and the road will be reopened within the next 24 hours.
“We’d like to thank the public for their patience and understanding while our teams work as quickly as they can to carry out the repair.”
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 1am today (Thursday) we were made aware of a burst water pipe on Killingworth Way in North Tyneside. Engineers are at the scene.
“The A189 is currently closed in all directions at the junction of Killingworth Way and Sandy Lane Roundabout. Motorists should use alternative routes where possible.”
