The North East coast from Whitley Bay to Hartlepool is at risk of flooding on Friday afternoon, the Government has warned.
This is due to high tides, strong winds and large waves which coincide with the astronomical peak tides – high tide is expected to be around 5.30pm. The Government’s new Check for Flooding service shows a flood alert is in place, and how this could lead to issues along beaches, promenades and coastal roads.
The warning reads: “Flooding is possible. Be prepared.”
The official Government message continues: “High tides, strong winds and large waves on Friday afternoon, 03/01/2025, may lead to flooding. Astronomical tides peak today, 03/01/25. Areas most at risk include beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and checking flood defences. Be careful along beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous.
“Highest tide level is expected to be at beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads at 5:30 PM on 03/01/2025. Flooding is possible 2 hours either side of this time.”
This alert affects from St Mary’s Lighthouse in Whitley Bay to Crimdon Park, north of Hartlepool.
