Firefighters in Leicestershire were called to 17 fires across Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The “majority” of the incidents were oven fires.
There were also a number of chimney fires that crews were called to over the three-day period. Fires caused by candles were also reported, the spokeswoman said. The service could not provide exact details of each incident.
It also attended seven crashes on the roads over the three days. They included an incident in which a car left the M1 and crashed into trees in between Loughborough and Coalville. The driver was uninjured and “walked away”. The service said it was also called to three “rescue incidents”.

Previously, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service offered advice on how to prevent kitchen fires. It said:
-
Take extra care if you need to leave the kitchen whilst cooking, take pans off the heat or turn them down to avoid risk.
-
Avoid cooking when under the influence of alcohol
-
Double check the cooker is off when you’ve finished cooking
-
Avoid leaving children in the kitchen alone when cooking. Keep matches and sauce pan handles out of their reach to keep them safe
-
Take care if you’re wearing loose clothing – they can easily catch fire
-
Keep tea towels and cloths away from the cooker and hob
