Fire crews battle large blaze in Leicestershire

Fire crews are tackling a large waste fire in Leicestershire this morning, with road closures in place. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) said it was called to reports of a fire in the open at around 8.52pm yesterday (December 31), with six crews attending the scene in Little Glen Road, in Glen Parva..

Strong winds are said to have hampered firefighting efforts overnight as smoke from the blaze spread to nearby homes according to LFRS. A fire service spokeswoman said the waste fire spread to cover an area of 25 metres by 25 metres – around the size of a tennis court.

Leicestershire Police announced shortly after midnight that Little Glen Road had been closed between Westminster Avenue and Leicester Road because of thr incident. The force urged motorists to find alternative routes.

A spokeswoman for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said today (January 1): “We were called to reports of a fire on Little Glen Road at 8:52 pm. Crews from Coalville, Eastern, Central, Southern, Market Bosworth, and Wigston attended the scene, using three pumps to tackle the blaze.”

The spokeswoman added: “The fire involved a large amount of waste, with strong winds making it more challenging to extinguish. Smoke from the fire travelled into nearby homes and pedestrian areas, and efforts were made to reduce its impact on residents.”

Fire crews remain at the scene as the blaze continues to burn this morning. The Canal and River Trust has been notified about potential water contamination due to the significant amount of water being used to fight the fire, said LFRS.
