A farm shop, retail and cafe development is being planned for a Cambridgeshire farm. It follows an application which was put forward to South Cambridgeshire District Council last month.
The plans, submitted by G Robinson and Partners, involve the conversion of agricultural buildings at Fernleigh Farm near Fulbourn. They aim to create “a high-quality destination”, featuring food and drink offerings, boutique retail spaces, and a community hub.
The farm has been owned by the White family since 1912 and was farmed by multiple generations. It has since been transformed into a space for various commercial uses and supporting local businesses, with the plan looking to retain the majority of existing buildings.
Among the proposals for the site include a farm shop that offers a wide range of fresh produce sourced from local and regional suppliers. The shop will feature a butchery counter, deli, selection of ambient foods, fresh, chilled and frozen items, products from local brewers and distilleries, as well as a curated gifting range.
There will also be a new cafe open every day of the week, serving a range of handmade fresh seasonal and local food, a wide variety of cakes and drinks, afternoon teas, freshly brewed coffee, sandwiches, vegetarian and gluten-free options, and more. This will feature a space for local residents, clubs and community groups.
The business plan for the site also includes details of a retail village, with the farm buildings transformed into spaces for high-end, independent businesses available for lease. Planned tenants include a country clothing supplier, a classic toy shop, a florist, and a handmade product supplier.
Other things included in the proposal are pop-up events throughout the year, including market stalls and food trucks. There would also be a special outdoor play area, that would be located near the cafe building.
A design and access statement from the applicants said: “The renovation of the agricultural barns, sheds, and stables into a vibrant farm shop and countryside centre represents a transformative project that balances historical preservation with modern sustainability and community engagement.
“The development will include diverse community spaces, such as a cafe and small retail units, which will serve as vibrant hubs for socialising and local commerce.
“The farm shop will champion local produce, providing a platform for regional farmers, artists, and vendors to showcase their products and crafts, fostering a strong sense of community and support for local economies. The inclusion of community spaces is integral to the project’s vision, providing venues for workshops, events, and activities that engage and enrich the community.
“This project not only preserves the historical essence of the existing agricultural structures but also reimagines them as a contemporary centre for community and sustainability. By integrating modern amenities with a commitment to local produce and culture, the farm shop and countryside centre will celebrate and support the local heritage, culture, and economy.”
A decision on the application will be made by South Cambridgeshire District Council at a later date. To view the plans in full, visit the planning portal, using the reference 24/04820/FUL or click here.
