An Arctic chill has overtaken the country in the past week with temperatures dropping to well below freezing across Ireland and the UK.
Experts have forecast the continuation of the current cold snap as a -20C temperature swing is predicted off Ireland on Friday night.
Despite forecasters predicting a return to more ambient temperature on Friday, a major drop is expected in areas near Ireland with temperatures expected to drop below -20C in Scotland.
In an update on Friday, Met4CastUK reported: “Temperatures are already down to -17.2C in Altnaharra. Seems highly likely we’ll see temperatures drop below -20C tonight.”
Expert Daniel aka TheSnowDreamer on X (formerly Twitter) added: “After the coldest night for many we’re also seeing the coldest afternoon of winter so far.
“Northolt in west London for example had an overnight low of -6.6C it has not got higher than 1.1C so far.
“N Scotland is in the ice box -11C at Altnaharra during the warmest part of the day.”
Meanwhile, Ireland Weather Channel said in an update on Friday: “The thaw is on its way, though it may be rather slow to arrive today in many northern areas, with temperatures still down to -7 in the north Midlands, whereas in Cork temperatures are already up to +7 degrees Celsius, meaning we have a temperature gradient across Ireland of 14 degrees Celsius.

“There has been a little fresh snow in some parts over night, especially over the higher ground of the south and southwest, falling mostly as sleet elsewhere. That band of rain, sleet and snow will gradually make its way up across the country during the day bringing milder air to all areas.
“For the weekend it’s a mostly dry picture, with high pressure taking control of our weather. There’ll be some sunny soells, but a good deal of cloud around also, especially in the west where it may be thick enough for some spells of mist and drizzle. Feeling noticeably milder with highs of up to 7-9 degrees likely by Sunday as the thaw continues.”
