Parts of Cambridgeshire will see freezing temperatures and frosty conditions this week as a cold snap hits the UK. An amber cold health alert has been issued by the UK Health Security Agency and is due to last until 12pm on Wednesday (January 8).
The Met Office has also put a yellow weather warning for snow and ice in place across the county. This will be in effect from 12pm today (January 4) until 11.59pm on Sunday (January 5).
The forecaster has predicted that snow could arrive in some areas of Cambridgeshire during the night, with temperatures dropping to around 0C. People are being advised to wrap up warm and be cautious while outside.
Below are the exact times it will be coldest in Cambridge, Peterborough and Ely over the next few days. All weather conditions are subject to change, but were correct at the time of publication.
Cambridge
The latest Met Office forecast for Cambridge suggests that temperatures will range from 1C to 3C throughout today with conditions being at their coldest from 4pm to 5pm. It will remain cloudy for most of the day, although sleet will appear from 8pm onwards.
Cold temperatures will carry on throughout the early hours of Sunday morning, although it will be warmer with maximum temperatures of 11C in the afternoon. However, rain is forecast from 2am to 11am and from 6pm to 11pm.
Monday (January 6) is due to see a minimum temperature of 2C at 9pm, while Tuesday (January 7) will be 0C from 6am to 9am as well as 9pm onwards. The forecaster has warned that conditions could feel like they are in the sub-zero range throughout both days.
Peterborough
Peterborough will see similar conditions, with coldest temperatures of 1C expected in the evening from 10pm to 11pm. However, the Met Office said there is a chance of heavy snow in the latter hour, although this will quickly change to sleet at around midnight.
On Sunday, it will be a chilly morning, as temperatures are not expected to be higher than 5C, but it will warm up in the afternoon. Rain is forecast at all hours of the day, being at its heaviest from 7pm to 10pm.
The forecaster has said that Monday will be coldest at night, with 1C conditions expected from 9pm onwards. Meanwhile, Tuesday will also be 0C from 6am to 9am as well as 9pm onwards, but it could feel as low as -5C during those times.
Ely
Those living in or visiting Ely can also expect chilly conditions over the next few days. Saturday evening in particular could see light snow from 8pm to 9pm, with the Met Office saying it is likely to turn heavier from 10pm to 11pm, as conditions range from 1C to 2C.
Heading into Sunday, there is a chance of snow from midnight to 1am, but this will turn into rain in the early hours. Much like Cambridge and Peterborough, it will be cold in the morning, but warm up as we go into the afternoon.
Monday will be as low as 1C from around 9pm and as high as 4C from 12pm to 3pm. On Tuesday, it is also expected to be 0C, with sunny intervals forecast.
