‘Every point is gold’ says Hull City boss as he demands Leeds United copy

Ruben Selles admits every point is worth its weight in gold in Hull City’s quest to avoid relegation to League One as he prepares for Saturday’s testing trip to Millwall.

City fought back from 3-1 down to earn a pulsating 3-3 draw with leaders Leeds United last time out, but remain firmly entrenched in the battle to survive after managing just five wins in the Championship all season, but will face a Lions side still finding their feet under new boss Alex Neil.

Selles has engineered a recovery since taking over at City last month, winning two, drawing two and losing three of his seven games in charge, though those three defeats have come by just a solitary goal with the Spaniard believing his side have been competitive in all their games, a trait he hopes will help turn the dial in their favour over the remaining 20 games and secure enough points to remain in the league.

Picking up points as they did, and in the manner they did, will only help Selles embed his ethos into a dressing room that has seen two very different philosophies under recent managers, Liam Rosenior and Tim Walter.

“It’s important also to support your idea with results,” Selles said. “You can have the best idea in the world, the best application, but at the end of the day, if you don’t get those results even though you’re in the process, people start to doubt. I don’t think that has been the case here.

“We have been competitive in every game since the very beginning, and the Leeds result should be a booster for us just to prove that we can compete against anybody.”

If City are to get out of their rather dicey predicament in the remaining games, Selles says his players must channel that level of performance every week, with three coming this week against the Lions, QPR and then Sheffield United.

“Absolutely (results like Leeds help the feeling). We don’t need to forget that we came from a period that the team didn’t get the results that we wanted, and now the fact the Leeds game, it’s obviously it’s difficult to win the game, but in the end, you manage to get a point and get one more point in the way that we did.

“We are fighting now and in the position that we are. It’s gold for us every point and every situation like that. So it’s a human being like that (revelling in the comeback), but we also know that we need to deliver performances to get results, and that’s the only way we will really get out of this situation.”
