Empty, overgrown former Cardiff pub site could be turned into housing

After two and half years of being vacant, Cardiff Council have put plans forward to transform a local pub. When The Wolf’s Castle closed in August 2022, it devastated landlady Angela Bloom and her regular customers, but the building has since been left unused.

Cardiff Council have been working to establish a new use for the vacant building in Llanishen after they were unable to maintain it as a licensed premises the housing department took over the site. A consultation began on December 18, 2024 asking local residents their opinions on the council’s plan to transform the historic site into housing.

The scheme includes the demolition of the former public house along with the development of family accommodation. Whilst housing for the elderly was considered but it was decided that the area was more in need of a place to house families. For the latest Cardiff news, sign up to our newsletter here

The site was once used as farmland in the 1800’s with part of the 19th farmhouse still standing at the core of the building. The public house that stands on the site now was built and used as a pub for 64 years before being left vacant.

In July 2024, the council included The Wolf’s Castle on their proposed Cardiff Local Heritage List created to ‘protect and celebrate local buildings’ in Cardiff. It has been considered within the council’s plan to preserve areas of the building that have historical value.

Councillor Garry Hunt for Llanishen said it is a “shame” that the building has been unused and left for over two years. He said: “It is a shame that its been vacant for a long time and that some grassland will be taken away if this development is carried out. Councillor Bethan Proctor and I have been regularly checking on the progress on the development. There has been a little bit of anti-social behaviour associated with the site which we’ve been keeping an eye on as well.

“There has been quite a lot of discussion around the site and legal action that has been taking place so it has taken a time to get to where we are but we are certainly in a very positive place. If everything goes smoothly then it could well be that there could be development on there fairly soon.”
