Emmerdale’s Beth Cordingly has opened up about her character Ruby’s upcoming storyline on the popular ITV soap. The plot sees Ruby grappling with the traumatic sexual abuse she endured from her father Anthony, and this week’s episodes will see her wrestling with the decision to open DNA test results that could confirm whether her husband Caleb or her abusive father is the biological parent of her daughter Steph.
Ahead of the intense episodes, Beth shared insights into Ruby’s emotional turmoil, explaining that Ruby is desperate for confirmation that her worst fear isn’t a reality – that Steph isn’t her father’s child. “She wants that reassurance so she can move on. But she’s always had the fear, from the minute she got pregnant, that the baby may not be Caleb’s. She didn’t deceive him, she just desperately wanted it to be his,” she revealed.

The 48-year-old actress also expressed relief at finally being able to share Ruby’s story with viewers, especially given her character’s past actions which included running over Ethan Anderson in revenge, scheming against Kim Tate, and having an affair with Caleb’s half-brother Cain. “It’s lovely that the audience is now in on her story and able to go on the journey with her,” she said.
“I feel the audience will now understand her behaviour more. It’s a massive privilege to do a storyline like that, and we all really hope we’re getting it right.”
Beth didn’t shy away from the challenge of exploring a storyline centred on abuse. “It’s a subject that I feel, as many people do, very passionately about,” she states, reports the Mirror.
Beth worked with charities like the NSPCC on the harrowing storyline
“I’ve worked in the past with Childline and the NSPCC, so it’s a subject that I wasn’t nervous about taking on.”
She further elaborated on her commitment to the role: “It was more that you just really want to make sure that if you’re telling something like that, you’re telling it right. If it helps one person or can help one person feel validated, or admit ‘this happened to me’, then that would be a really amazing thing.”
In recent weeks, Emmerdale fans have been speculating fiercely on social platforms about the possible DNA bombshell that could explode within the plot, especially with fears around Anthony potentially being Steph’s father escalating. A concerned fan expressed their apprehension online: “PLEEEEEASE don’t let Anthony be Steph’s dad, he’s vile. Makes my skin crawl. Proper feeling it for Ruby #Emmerdale,” lamented one viewer.
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays
