Plans for an eight storey hotel in Galway have finally been quashed after four years of debate as the decision is made official this week.
An Bord Pleanala have refused a proposal for a 186-room hotel in Galway city first lodged back in 2020 by Parosi Development Ltd.
If approved, the hotel would have been located at a site in Briarhill Business Park in Ballybrit.
The hotel plans included a bar/lounge area, meeting rooms, spa treatment rooms as well as a gym.
The spa was set to be built with a swimming pool, a whirlpool, a sauna/steam room, male and female changing rooms, and storage rooms on the ground floor.
The plans were initially refused by An Bord Pleanala but the case was reopened earlier in 2024.
However, a final decision has been made to refuse the plans for the major development.
Meanwhile this week, Galway will soon have a new indoor market which will host the very best of local food, art, crafts, produce, clothing and more.

Locky’s Wonder Emporium, a local non-profit focussing on sustainable businesses, has organised the excited new initiative due to open soon.
However, businesses, artisans and farmers have until 16 January 2025 to apply with Locky’s Wonder Emporium sharing the form online on which those interested in taking their place are encouraged to register.
“Here’s our exciting news for the people of Galway: we are launching a permanent indoor market this year in Moycullen; for sustainable goods and products.
“If you are an organic farmer or sustainable crafter, producer, designer, baker, etc; and would be interested in having a stall at Galway’s only permanent Indoor Market, please fill out this Expression of Interest form (deadline for filing is the 16th of January.)”
They cautioned that space is limited and that demand may be high, some of those who apply may not be granted a spot. Confirmation will be made to respondents by mid February: “Please note filling out the form does not guarantee a space. We will get back to responders by Feb 13th.”
