The Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings for ice and snow this weekend, with the capital in store for a below-freezing start to the new year.
Temperatures will fall widely below freezing on Friday night (January 3) allowing ice to form on untreated surfaces like roads and pavements. Snow is predicted for later in the weekend starting on Sunday.
The warning for ice is in place from 4pm on Friday, January 3 until 10am on Saturday, January 4. The warning for snow will go into effect late in the weekend, from midnight on Sunday, January 5 until 12pm the following day.
Outbreaks of snow are likely to appear throughout Sunday with a chance for high accumulation in some areas.
Southern and eastern Scotland are at highest risk, predicts the Met Office, with 2-5cm of snow in some areas and up to 10-20cm over high ground.

Travelers are advised not to rush when on the roads or pavement to avoid slips and accidents. When possible, stick to main roads which are more likely to have been treated.
If driving, make sure to have essentials packed in your car in case of delays – such as warm clothing, blankets, a torch, ice scraper, food, and water.
If making a journey on foot, stick to pavements along main roads that are less likely to be slippery.
Consider stocking up on torches or batteries in the event of power cuts.
