Edinburgh locals call for bus service to connect capital’s beaches

A petition calling for a new bus service to serve the coastal capital communities of Cramond and Portobello has been launched.

Started by Benjamin Collins, the petition has gained 157 signatures a week after launching, and he is hoping to gain the attention of Edinburgh Council and Lothian Buses.

Benjamin believes a new route along Edinburgh’s coastline could lead to a boom in tourism as well as for local businesses in the area.

The petition reads: “As an Edinburgh local who has spent all of my adult life in this beautiful city, I know the value of accessible and efficient public transportation. From the quiet charm of Cramond to the eclectic vibe of Portobello, our coastal region is the lifeblood of our community.

“Unbelievably, there’s still no bus route that directly connects these two areas – Cramond and Portobello – covering Granton, Wardie, Trinity, Newhaven, Leith in between. Considering that roughly a third of Edinburgh’s population resides in these areas, the absence of such a fundamental service is perplexing.

“Take a moment to think about the stunning views, the fresh sea air, the charming local businesses that could be literally at everyone’s doorsteps. Imagine the positive impact this could have on tourism, local businesses, and even our daily commutes. It would not only add significant value to our local areas, but it would also have an immense convenience factor for both locals and tourists alike.

“It’s time for our city to put in place a direct coastal bus route covering these areas. By doing so, Edinburgh could more effectively utilize its public transport system, and open up travel options for everyone who lives here and visits our great city.

“This is a modest request, but it would have significant daily effects for many of us. I urge everyone who calls Edinburgh their home, or has an affinity for our city, to sign this petition and bring a pivotal change. Our collective voice has the power to bring forth a better connected Edinburgh – one bus route at a time.”

The petition has gained the support of Pilton local Michele Bernardini who believes the new route would be a great addition to Edinburgh.

The 32-year-old believes the bus route could lead to further developments which would revolutionise the capital coastline.

“I fully support the idea of establishing a new coastal bus route between Cramond and Musselburgh,” Michele said. “Such a service would not only improve connectivity for Edinburgh residents but also provide a much-needed link between key recreational and residential areas along the coastline.

“This proposed route would connect the upcoming Granton tramline terminal (expected to be operational in 2025) with the existing Newhaven terminal, further enhancing the city’s public transport network. Additionally, it would offer a direct, convenient option for those traveling between Cramond, Portobello, Musselburgh, and other areas, bypassing the busy city centre.

“Historically, Edinburgh’s north side was known for its industrial and fishing heritage. Today, it is transforming into a hub for outdoor leisure activities, benefiting both residents and visitors.

“A coastal bus route would not only support this evolution but also lay the groundwork for future developments, such as a unified promenade along Edinburgh’s coastline with services and amenities for all to enjoy. This project has the potential to become one of the city’s most iconic transport routes, promoting sustainable travel and enhancing access to Edinburgh’s beautiful coastal areas.”

Edinburgh Council and Lothian Buses have been approached for comment.
