Edinburgh and Lothians locals capture mesmerising Northern Lights on New Year’s Day

Residents across Edinburgh and the Lothians have been able to capture stunning pictures of the Northern Lights.

Also known as the Aurora Borealis, the celestial wonder has burst into action shortly after the sun went down on January 1.

People located in Edinburgh, Midlothian, West Lothian and East Lothian have all witnessed the natural phenomenon from their homes.

The Met Office told those on the East Coast of Scotland to keep an eye out for the Northern Lights with conditions being perfect so long as cloud cover died away.

Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge told the PA news agency: “Although the solar conditions are set fair to see the northern lights, unfortunately the meteorological conditions are not that helpful.

“Scotland should provide the best chances but with unsettled conditions dominating it will be hard to get a guaranteed view.
