Early social welfare payment coming after schedule change as bonus brought forward

Parents are due to receive their February Child Benefit payments ahead of schedule due to a change in the payment timetable.

The St Brigid’s Day bank holiday means that banks and post offices will be shut on Monday, 3rd February. As a result, any social welfare payments scheduled for Monday, as well as Child Benefit due on Tuesday, will be dispatched or made accessible on Friday, 31st January or Saturday, 1st February.

Due to the bank holiday on Monday, parents can expect their Child Benefit payments to land in their accounts on either Friday or Saturday. This is typically the case when a bank holiday Monday falls before the first Tuesday of the month.

Here are the Child Benefit payment dates for the remainder of the year, along with the months when early payment is likely:.

  • 4th March.
  • 1st April.
  • 6th May (may be paid early due to May Bank Holiday on the 5th).
  • 3rd June (may be paid early due to June Bank Holiday on the 2nd).
  • 1st July.
  • 5th August (may be paid early due to August Bank Holiday on the 4th).
  • 2nd September.
  • 7th October.
  • 4th November.
  • 9th December.

This alteration in payment date follows the Department of Social Protection’s introduction of a new grant for parents starting this month. In Budget 2025, it was announced that a New Baby Grant of €280 would be added to the first month of Child Benefit for:.

  • Children born on or after 1 December 2024.
  • An adopted child placed in your care on or after 1 December 2024.

The grant is paid in conjunction with the child’s first Child Benefit payment of €140, meaning that parents will receive a total of €420 for their new baby. New parents who don’t have any other children will be sent a form to register for Child Benefit after they register their child’s birth.

Meanwhile, parents with existing children who welcome a new baby will automatically have their new child added to their existing Child Benefit claim and will be notified when they are due to receive Child Benefit for their new baby.
