E-bike rider taken to hospital after crashing into pedestrians in Nottingham city centre

An electric bike rider was taken to hospital after colliding with two people in a pedestrianised area of Nottingham city centre. Police found a knife at the scene after being called to the collision in Goose Gate at around 4pm on Sunday, December 29.

Officers discovered the bike rider hurt and lying in the street. He was taken to hospital and later found to have suffered injuries which are not believed to be life-altering or life-threatening, Nottinghamshire Police said.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a knife in a public place, riding an electric bike without due care and attention and while unfit through drugs. Inspector Dan Buckle said: “Officers at the scene should be commended for recovering this knife and taking it out of harm’s way.

“Electric bikes, as well as electric scooter, can pose a significant risk to other road users, pedestrians and to the riders themselves. We have recently targeted areas of the city centre to crack down on illegal use of these devices, seizing bikes and educating riders about the laws surrounding their use.”

Under current legislation private e-scooters cannot be ridden on public highways or in public spaces. E-bikes, meanwhile, are legal to use across the country but must not exceed an output of 250 watts or travel faster than 15.5mph.
