Some households may soon see cash payments from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) appearing in their bank accounts as cold weather bites. The Cold Weather Payment scheme offers support to vulnerable households when temperatures plummet for a prolonged period.
The boost, available between November 2024 and March 2025, is specifically for individuals receiving certain DWP means-tested benefits. Payments of £25 are made per seven days if the average temperature in a specific area falls to zero degrees or below.
Eligible households will receive the money automatically, so there’s no need to apply.

Can I receive a Cold Weather Payment?
You might be able to get these payments if you’re receiving the following:
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Pension Credit
- Income Support
- Universal Credit
- Support for Mortgage Interest
These benefits have certain criteria that qualify an individual for payment, such as having a disability or living with a child under five. People who live in Scotland are not eligible for Cold Weather Payments but may instead receive a Winter Heating Payment, according to the Express.

How can I check if my postcode is eligible for a Cold Weather Payment?
You can check using the Government’s tool. The calculators differ for each nation, so residents of England, Wales, or Northern Ireland should select the appropriate one (Scotland does not get the payments, but people there can get the winter heating payment instead).
The first Cold Weather Payments of the year have been triggered following a recent plunge in temperatures in northern England. The DWP has revealed that 18 postcode areas in England are set to receive payments for the period from January 2 to January 9, according to the Manchester Evening News.
These payments were previously activated in mid-November during the season’s initial cold snap. Regions expected to receive a payment include specific parts of Cumbria and Northumberland.
