Met Eireann has issued a further Status Orange warning for 25 counties for tonight as the cold snap continues to grip the nation.
Donegal is the only county not under the Orange snow and ice warning, which comes into effect from 6pm this evening and lasts until 11am on Thursday morning. The forecaster warns of “extremely cold with widespread severe frost, ice and lying snow”.
Potential impacts include dangerous travelling conditions on roads and underfoot, travel disruption and delays and animal welfare issues. An Orange warning which came into effect last night remains in place until 10am this morning.
Today will be bitterly cold in Dublin with widespread frost, ice and patches of freezing fog which will persist all day. It will be dry with some sunny spells but temperatures will peak at just 0 to 4C.
Tonight will see the mercury plunge to -2 to -5C as it becomes extremely cold. There will also be severe frost, ice or black ice and patches of freezing fog.
Thursday will remain very cold with widespread frost, ice and some lingering freezing fog. Highest temperatures will again be between 0 and 4C.
The national forecast predicts an upswing in temperatures won’t arrive until Sunday when temperatures climb as high as 11C. The forecast for Friday evening reads: “Friday night will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, which will clear northeastwards overnight. It won’t be as cold as previous nights with lowest temperatures of 0 to 5 degrees. Southerly winds will ease light allowing fog to develop.”
Saturday will see temperatures rise slightly although there will be outbreaks of rain. Met Eireann say: “On Saturday morning, outbreaks of rain will continue and then gradually clear to the east and north through the afternoon.
“Highest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees generally, milder in parts of the west and southwest, in mostly light southwesterly breezes. Saturday night will be mainly dry with lowest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees.”
It looks set to get warmer from Sunday although there will be some rain and drizzle. The forecast reads: “Sunday will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain. It will be noticeably milder with highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees and moderate to fresh southerly winds. Early next week will be mild with a fair amount of dry weather and some rain or drizzle at times.”
