The farewell to 2024 looks set to be a washout before the New Year sees temperatures plummet to as low as -4C.
Met Eireann say it will be rather cloudy and wet this morning in Dublin with a band of rain drifting south. It will stay cloudy tonight with rain persisting and potentially turning heavy at times.
January 1 will see more heavy rain to start with although it is expected to clear away later in the morning followed by a mix of cloud and a few isolated showers. Tomorrow afternoon will see temperatures of 6 to 8C but it will turn very cold in the evening and the cold snap is set to last for the rest of the week according to the national forecast.
Wednesday will see temperatures plunge to between 0 and -3C cold with a northerly breeze. A few showers will drift down over the country, turning wintry at times in the far north, mainly over higher ground with some dry spells further south.
Thursday will be largely dry and sunny although it will remain cold with the mercury sinking as low as -4C overnight. Friday will see another mix of sunny spells and cloudy periods with Met Eireann saying it will be “bitterly cold”. Daytime temperatures are likely to only climb to between 1 to 5C before dropping down to between 1 and -3C overnight.
The weekend doesn’t look to be much better with current indications suggesting a rather unsettled couple of days with outbreaks of rain and blustery winds. It will also remain very cold although temperatures are expected to rise again towards the end of the weekend.
