Driver named and charged after van crash kills horse and injures little girl

A driver has been charged after a girl was injured in a crash and a horse had to be put down at the scene. The collision, at Altarnun near Launceston, involved a van and a horse and its rider on Sunday, January 12.

The horserider, an eight-year-old girl, was airlifted to hospital but has been discharged because her injuries were not as serious as first believed. The horse had to be put to sleep by vets at the scene, Devon and Cornwall Police said.

Officers arrested a 61-year-old man from Launceston following the crash. Police have since confirmed Christopher Rogers, of Bolventor, has been charged with driving without due care, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, failing to stop after a road accident and criminal damage.

He has been released on bail and is due to appear before Bodmin Magistrates’ Court on Friday, February 7. Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Police have charged a man in connection to a road traffic collision at Altarnun, near Launceston involving a van and horse on Sunday 12 January.

“The rider of the horse, an eight-year-old child, was airlifted to hospital but has since been discharged as her injuries were not as serious as first thought. The horse had to be humanely put to sleep by vets at the scene.

“Christopher Rogers, 61, of Bolventor, Launceston, has been charged with driving without due care, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, failing to stop after a road accident and criminal damage. He has been released on bail and is due to appear before Bodmin Magistrates’ Court on Friday 7 February.”
