A bus narrowly missed crashing into a north London pub in a dramatic start to the new year on Wednesday (January 1). The double-decker bus smashed into the pub’s ‘front garden’ and collided with a tree, according to an onlooker.
Emergency services were called to The Garden Gate pub in Hampstead at around 1.25pm yesterday. While there were no reported injuries, the incident did see the London Fire Brigade, ambulance and police all attend.
No one had been sitting in the pub’s patio at the time due to the heavy rain, a pub worker told The Standard. Cat, who had been sitting inside The Garden Gate, told MyLondon: “We were in the Garden Gate when we heard a crash and looked out the window to see the bus in the front garden.

“Everyone on the bus appeared to be fine as we saw them walk off and luckily no one was in the garden at the time due to the bad weather. I’m not sure what caused the crash but I wonder if it could have been related to the high winds.”
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Service said: “At 1.23pm on Wednesday, January 1 police were called to South End Road, NW3 following reports that a bus had struck a tree outside a pub.
“Officers attended with the London Fire Brigade and the London Ambulance Service. There were no reports of any injuries and no damage to the pub itself.”
Transport for London told The Standard: “We are aware that a bus collided with a tree in South End Green on January 1 at 1pm. Thankfully, no one was injured, though we understand this may have been distressing for those involved and support is available for anyone affected by it. We are working with the bus operator, GoAhead London, to establish what happened.”
