Dog walkers cut off by rising tide on Cornish coast at 4am in the dark on New Year’s Day

Emergency services were called to a stranded group of people and their dogs who became trapped by the rising tide in Cornwall on New Year’s Day. In the early hours of this morning, January 1, 2025, lifeboats and a coastguard helicopter were deployed to the clifftops on Cornwall’s north coast.

Teams responded to reports of a group of casualties on a ledge at the high water mark with rough conditions and the tide still on the way in. A cliff technician was sent down the cliff to assess the situation and casualties were then brought to the clifftop.

HM Coastguard Portreath Rescue Team shared details of the rescue. It said three people and two dogs were brought back to the clifftop.

“After multiple visits to the base of the cliffs all casualties were recovered in time just before the ledge started getting covered with the waves,” a spokesperson said.

“There was a positive outcome to this incident but this could have been very different. We couldn’t stress enough the need to check tide times and weather conditions before walking around the coast.”

Local residents reported hearing helicopter activity between 4am and 4.45am along the north coast.
