Disqualified driver rammed police car in ‘dangerous’ chase

A Leicestershire man tried to ram a police car during a “dangerous” pursuit. Michael Williams was spotted by Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras before the chase through South Derbyshire took place.

Williams, of Ash Grove, Coalville, was driving a loaded Ford Transit recovery truck carrying a Vauxhall Corsa when he was clocked by ANPR cameras on Saturday, December 14. After failing to stop for officers, he made several attempts to reverse into a police car during the pursuit through Shardlow.

The pursuit came to an end when 29-year-old Williams hit a dead end in the road. Officers from the Swadlincote Police Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) said Williams then fled across fields, heading towards woodland near the River Derwent.

The SNT said Williams had been disqualified from driving by courts just 10 days before the incident. At the time, he had been given a suspended sentence.

The Coalville man appeared at Derbyshire Justice Centre on Monday, December 16 where he indicated a guilty plea to dangerous driving and pleaded guilty to using a motor vehicle without insurance and driving whilst disqualified. No plea was entered for the failing to stop for police charge and the court heard he had an arrest warrant out for failing to appear.

He was sentenced to 40 weeks in prison and disqualified from driving for three years, three months and 14 days. He must reapply for his licence and complete an extended driving test before being allowed back on the roads.
