Disgusting! Toilets at Murrayfield are rated worst in Six Nations by TripAdvisor punters

The toilets at Scotland’s largest stadium have been rated the worst out of all the Six Nations grounds ahead of the annual rugby extravaganza getting underway next month.

Murrayfield typically hosts 67,130 rugby fans for matches involving the national side. Ahead of the Six Nations, Irish bookmaker Boyle Sports studied TripAdvisor reviews about the condition of the facilities at each home ground.

It found that more than 10% of reviews about Scotland’s national stadium criticised the lavatories, with England’s Twickenham in second place in the ‘loo league of shame’ with 8% of reviews including negative comments about the toilets.

Wales’ Principality Stadium, Ireland’s Aviva Stadium, Italy’s Stadio Olimpico and France’s Stade de France all had 5% or less lamenting the poor state of the lavvies. The Stade de France had the best toilets according to reviews on Google and TripAdvisor.

One Tripadvisor reviewer said about Murrayfield: “I have been to many stadiums in my time and Murrayfield has a great atmosphere. But they neglect the most important thing, which is always the toilets. They are disgusting as they do not flush properly. By the end of the rugby match the toilets were literally flooded because no one can work out how to flush them.”

Another claimed that women were often forced to use the male loos due to a lack of female facilities, writing: “Our only complaint is the lack of women’s toilets, forcing many women to use the men’s toilets and split cubicles among hundreds of people.”

With 125 negative mentions, toilet issues feature in 10.79% of overall complaints about Murrayfield. Some punters even reported a lack of hot water in the bogs. The stadium was built in 1925 and was last renovated in 1994, when the Scottish Rugby Union completed a £50million redevelopment project.

Murrayfield chairman John McGuigan recently promised money would be set aside for improving the ground, with fixing the toilet facilities among the top priorities.

Scotland’s Six Nations campaign gets underway at home to Italy on February 1, with Ireland visiting on February 9 and Wales heading north on March 8.

After last year’s Taylor Swift concerts over three nights in July – with the capacity extended to 73,000 – this year will see Oasis playing Scottish Gas Murrayfield on Friday 8, Saturday 9 and Tuesday 12 August.
