Derbyshire hour-by-hour wind and rain forecasts as two Met Office weather warnings come into force

A yellow weather warning for rain in parts of Derbyshire has been issued by the Met Office from now through to 11am on New Year’s Day. The warning, which covers county towns including Ashbourne, Bakewell, Buxton, Matlock and Glossop, came into force at 3pm this afternoon (Tuesday, December 31).

A second yellow warning for wind, covering Derby and the entire wider county, comes into force just after midnight on Wednesday, January 1 and expires later in the day at 3pm. Wind gusts of around 50mph are expected in the county on New Year’s Eve night heading into the early hours of New Year’s Day.

A Met Office spokesman said: “A period of strong winds during Wednesday may lead to some disruption. Inland, highest gusts will typically be between 45mph and 55mph, but possibly 60mph in places, particularly in association with the passage of squally cold front which will bring a band of heavy rain southwards.

“The wind is expected to ease quickly from the north through the course of the day as this cold front passes.” The rain, combined with the strong winds, is expected to fall heavily in many areas of the country.

The Met Office spokesman added: “Beginning on New Year’s Eve, persistent and at times heavy rainfall is expected as a band of rain becomes slow-moving across the region, accompanied by strong south-westerly winds which will gust 50-60 mph in places. This rain then clears slowly southwards later on Wednesday morning.

“30mm-50 mm rain is expected fairly widely, with 50-100 mm across west-facing hills. There is a chance a few locations could see in excess of 100 mm during the event, with north Wales the most likely region to see these larger totals.”

The Met Office has also warned that delays to rail, air and public transport is possible, particularly as a result of the strong winds. Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.
