Derbyshire fog warning in place as Met Office issues key advice

The Met Office has issued a Derbyshire weather warning and is urging motorists to avoid delays by planning any journeys accordingly. The forecaster says thick fog is expected across large parts of Derbyshire after the yellow warning came into affect at 8pm on Wednesday (January 15).

It is in place until 11am on Thursday (January 16), with the forecaster warning that visibility could be reduced to less than 100 metres. A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Areas of fog will continue to develop through Wednesday evening and overnight and, in places, will be dense with visibility below 100 metres.

“Some of the fog will tend to thin and lift into low cloud across parts of southern England and the southeast Midlands by dawn, but is likely to persist in a corridor from southwest England through the rest of the Midlands to Lincolnshire and Yorkshire until late morning.”

People are being advised to give themselves the “best chance” of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, as well as leaving extra journey time or amending plans if necessary. The Met Office added: “Make sure you know how to switch on your fog lights, and check they are working before setting off on your journey.

“Bus and train services, as well as flights and ferry travel may also be affected; check for updates from your travel company and follow their advice. Be prepared for weather warnings to change: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”

Derby is expected to be affected by the fog, as well as other Derbyshire towns and villages such as Swadlincote, Ilkeston, Long Eaton and Willington. Areas to the north of Derby such as Belper, Ripley, Chesterfield, Matlock and Bakewell are not set to be affected by the warning.
