Dealer who offered free testers of heroin and crack cocaine to pay back £14,000

A drug dealer who lived a “cash rich” lifestyle and offered “free testers” of heroin and crack cocaine has been ordered to pay back £14,000 despite making £68,000. More than 800 drug related messages were found on his phone.

Shane Smith, 23, from Newport, played a key role in the supply of class A drugs in south Wales. Messages on his phone revealed he was directing others to supply drugs on his behalf, offering “money, fuel and meals” as well as “free testers” of crack and heroin.

The defendant pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of heroin and crack cocaine. He was sentenced to eight years imprisonment, at Cardiff Crown Court last year. For the latest court reports sign up to our crime newsletter here.

Detective constable Short of Gwent Police said: “Smith led a ‘cash-rich’ lifestyle going on expensive holidays, purchasing designer clothing and jewellery, despite being unemployed. As a result of his actions, Smith has been handed a substantial sentence which we hope will deter others from participating in this illegal activity. This is serious crime which affects everyone, and we welcome the continued support from the community.”

A Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday heard Smith benefited to the tune of £67,906 as a result of his offending, but only has assets worth £13,958. Judge Simon Mills ordered the defendant to pay that sum.
