Daughter, 26, tragically dies after scan to confirm miscarriage finds something even worse

A family has been left heartbroken following the tragic loss of their beloved 26-year-old daughter and sister, Rhiannon Morgan, who passed away on New Year’s Eve 2024. Rhiannon’s battle with cancer came to light following a scan for a miscarriage in November 2023.

Sarah Morgan, Rhiannon’s mother, shared the heartbreak of her daughter’s journey with WalesOnline, revealing how Rhiannon yearned to be a mother. Sarah said: “She had a miscarriage and when they scanned her following that they found the cancer between her hips and pelvis.

“The only symptoms she had before was pains at the top of her leg they just said was sciatica. She had painkillers for that and just carried on as normal until they found the cancer.”

“She was absolutely devastated, any of her friends would tell you she was absolutely brilliant with kids, her best friend has three little boys and they called her ‘Auntie Yanon’. She was absolutely devastated. She didn’t know whether it was a boy or a girl so she named the baby Rowan. She was about 10 weeks when she miscarried.”

Following the discovery of the mass, Rhiannon, originally from Newport but living in Ammanford, was sent to Birmingham to a specialist for a biopsy. It was there they discovered it was ewing sarcoma. It is a rare type of bone cancer that begins in the bones and mainly affects people age 10 to 20.

Rhiannon was put on chemotherapy following her diagnosis and also had proton beam therapy in London. She returned home in August but was in and out of hospital in the months prior to her death with sepsis, infections and needing blood transfusions.

Unfortunately the only treatment option that could have been used at this point was removing her pelvis and hips entirely, but Rhiannon was too weak to undergo this procedure.

Sarah said: “Around three weeks before she died they told us it was not treatable. She told her consultant from the start if I am going to die from this I don’t want to know. She was absolutely petrified of dying, so she didn’t want to know too much.”

Rhiannon was the eldest child and has a younger brother and sister who both adored her. “She had four cats, she absolutely loved them, and her other thing she loved was Man Unitedand Welsh rugby. So for the funeral we are going to ask people to wear the tops.

“We got on brilliant, me and Rhiannon, we used to Face Time every day. Obviously when she got more ill that wasn’t as often and that was hard but even harder now I don’t get a Face time or a phone call now. She loved reading, especially the Cathy Glass books, and doing Take-a-Break puzzles.”

Since Rhiannon’s passing, Sarah has been touched by messages from her friends, stories that she has not heard before. She joked: “I thought she was an angel and hearing stories that she wasn’t such an angel.

“They have sent me videos and pictures I’ve never seen before. Her friends are amazing.”

Sarah has set up a fundraiser to give Rhiannon the send off that she deserves. Sarah said: “It would mean so much to me and all the family if you could donate no matter how small, every donation will be very much appreciated.

“If there are any funds left after paying for Rhiannon’s funeral they will be donated to a cancer charity to help other families finding themselves in the same situation.” To make a donation click here.
