Ireland is set to see temperatures sliding to ‘dangerous’ levels this week as Met Eireann issues an ice warning for areas across the country.
13 counties have been placed under a status orange warning as ‘severe frost, ice and lying snow’ is forecast for several areas.
The warning was issued on Tuesday morning as weather experts predict a temperature drop to as low as -10C in some places.
The warning reads: “Status Orange – Low Temperature/Ice warning for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wicklow, Cavan, Monaghan, Munster, Connacht
“Extremely cold with widespread severe frost, ice and lying snow.”
The warning is in place from 8pm Tuesday until 10am on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, an update from Weather Alerts Ireland on Tuesday said: “Tonight temperatures will drop as low as -3 or -4°C, coldest in snow covered areas. Some wintry showers are expected overnight and ice will make roads treachorous tomorrow!
“Tomorrow night until Friday is quite concerning! Temperatures are expected to drop very low. With so many people stranded and without power I am concerned for their welfare during this exceptionally cold period.
“Temperatures Wednesday morning are forecast to drop as low as -10 or even -11°C in some areas on the high resolution HARMONIE and the ECWMF evening model! Widespread temperatures dropping below -4 to -6°C.

“Thursday morning is set to possibly be even colder still with the ECMWF model forecast a drop as low as -13°C! Again widespread temperatures below -4 to -8°C.
“These are not the ‘average winter temperatures’. My weather station lowest temperatures which has been running since Jan 2021 is -6.6°C. Other places in Ireland have of course been lower than this but below -10°C is dangerous. Especially for those folks stranded due to snow and are without electricity!

Meanwhile nearby Ireland, The Met Office has advised people to be “prepared” for snow, and the UK Health Security Agency has cold weather health alerts for all of England which runs until January 8. It warns a rise in deaths is likely; particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions.
A warning for snow and ice is in place across most of south-west England and Wales, and parts of north-west England and the West Midlands, between 5pm on Monday and 10am on Tuesday.
